Elhanan Halpern
1914 - 1995
He was born in Goniadz, in 1921 his family emigrated to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv. As a child he studied at the Tahkamoni school and then at the Covenant School. He began painting as an autodidact. From 1932 he studied at the Beit HaKram seminary, where he participated in painting classes led by Aharon Shaul Shor.
In 1933 he joined the "Bandit Alliance" and was a member of Hai, for his activities he was imprisoned in Latron and the prison in Acre.
In the years 1945-1948 he was the editor-in-chief of "Harot". In 1950 he began working at the Agricultural Center. In 1952 he served as a messenger on behalf of the Jewish Agency in Tunis. Then he went to Paris, where he studied painting.
He returned to newly-formed Israel where he was associated with artists from Streichman’s Studia Art group.”
In 1960 he received the Dizengoff Prize. In the years 1962–1977 he was the chairman of the Association of Painters and Sculptors in Israel, and in the years 1963–1967 he was a member of the International Committee of Painters at UNESCO. In the 1950s he was one of the founders of the "Teachers' Group". In 1975 he left his job at the Agricultural Center and devoted himself to painting. He lived and worked in Tel Aviv[2].
